We tend to retreat indoors as the temperatures get colder, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With a couple of additions, you can create a cozy outdoor space that invites relaxation all season long. This week, we have tips to help you make the most of your backyard this winter. Our suggestions may come in handy if you do any Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, or Cyber Monday shopping.
Bring the heat
Adding a fire pit can transform your backyard into a warm haven, according to Alex David of Homes and Gardens. It can make backyard fires much safer and keep you from trouble with the law.
“A firepit also does a great job of making a statement,” designer Tom Smith tells Homes and Gardens. “It can serve as a feature of your home and can make your yard look unique. There is a fire pit for every home style, and the ones they make today are just gorgeous.”
Whether you go for a modern laser-cut fire pit globe, or a classic cast-iron bowl with wood grates, fire pits exude heat and ambience.
So do other kinds of outdoor heaters. Users of a pellet patio heater told House Digest that it melted the ice on their front patio after a storm. They shared that they ended up sitting outside, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire on what would have otherwise been a dreary day.
For those who prefer a more targeted heat source, infrared heaters are booming. “The infrared technology heats objects rather than the air, so a swift breeze won’t stand a chance against them,” Sarah Nave of Mosaic Outdoor Living tells Home & Garden Colorado.
Create a cozy covered area
Consider adding a covered area to your backyard. This could be a pergola, gazebo, or even an enclosed sunroom that protects you from snow and rain while allowing you to enjoy the outdoors. A retractable cover can also provide flexibility.
Invest in waterproof outdoor furniture and cushions to make your space inviting, such as a sofa to cozy up together, according to Maria Isabela Reis of Lawn Love. Consider adding throw blankets for extra warmth and comfort, and an outdoor rug.
Light up your space
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of good lighting. As days grow shorter, ambient lighting is key for creating a cozy atmosphere. To keep your garden looking great, try using solar lights, LEDs, or even classic Christmas lights. Just be sure they’re weatherproof and won’t trip any circuits, according to Sarah Seguin of the QC Design School.
