Home decor is one of the least popular gifts to give during the holidays, according to the National Retail Federation. According to a recent survey, only 19% of gifts purchased fall under the home decor category, compared to whereas 54% are clothes or accessories.

One reason shoppers avoid getting decor items as gifts is that decorating can be very personal. The Escape Home spoke with Matt Carr, the vice president of design at Umbra, a modern home decor company. He helps us understand when gift-giving is appropriate and even welcomed.

When is decor appropriate, and when is it not

Carr says gifting can be both thoughtful and personal, but it does require considering the recipient’s needs, style, and space. He recommends gifting a practical yet stylish piece to personalize the person’s home. Recommended items include a unique kitchen product, a decorative game, or a stylish picture frame.

But a warning: gifting decor may not be a good idea if the person has a curated space, hates clutter, or has limited space.

Tips for choosing the perfect home decor gift

If you decide to give someone a decor object, here are three tips from Carr to help you decide.

  • Don’t just get a piece you like; get something that aligns with their aesthetic. This will ensure the gift complements their space. If you’re unsure, explore versatile and neutral items like sleek photo frames.
  • Maximize functionality: Look for multipurpose items that are practical and stylish For example, a decorated bottle opener that is functional and attractive, a sleek shelving unit that also doubles as a display, or a lamp with built-in charging ports. The versatility of these items can make the most out of limited space.
  • Get quality over quantity: Invest in one well-crafted item that feels thoughtful rather than smaller pieces. Items like a minimalist clock or a modern shoehorn can elevate a space while also having lasting value.

Decor trends this holiday season

If you need other suggestions for pieces that fit your recipient’s decor, here are some timeless trends that Carr is seeing this season.

  • Multifunctional and space-saving designs: Stylish storage solutions like wall hooks and modular furniture combining form and function are popular because they help people with small spaces.
  • Sustainable decor: Shoppers are turning towards chic and environmentally conscious materials; this includes sustainably sourced wood and recycled metals.
  • Minimalism: Clean lines, neutral tones and geometric shapes have stood the test of time. They fit into nearly any space, which makes them a timeless gift.
